Mayer Hawthorne – “I Wish It Would Rain” | Video

Weather you know him as Mayer Hawthorne or Dj Haircut is an arbitrary fact, but one fact that isn’t arbitrary at all is that the soulfully styled music the man puts out has the music world and masses have taken a liken to in a major way. Stones Throw really found that gem in the rough with Mayer Hawthorne as his debut release,  A Strange Arrangement, has seen the singing alter ego of the man from Detroit  be acknowledge for multiple accolades as well as perform on network television to the likes of Jimmy Kimmel. It was only right for his project to see a second visual treat in. “I Wish It Would Rain” was the perfect choice of tracks for the second video treatment; a simple melodic tune that really showcases the inspiration behind the sound Mayer Hawthrone has created for himself. A sound unique to this day and age of music overrun by uninspired vocals and catchy musical backdrops. The visuals for “I Wish It Would Rain” are perfect for the low key subject matter of the song as well as the period of music Mayer Hawthone’s sound gains inspiration from.

5 Minutes with… Al Moran

Al Moran is the driving force and creative director behind the amazing O.H.W.O.W Gallery in Miami. A gallery that in 2 short years has become one of the most influential in the world today, not only bringing some of the best and most memorable exhibitions to its space, but publishing a selection of collectable art books, and generally changing the scene in a great way. We caught up with Al.(And a huge congratulations from the team at SLAMXHYPE on the birth of Al’s new baby!)

Name: Al Moran

Location: Miami Beach

What are you reading? The Selected Essays of Gore Vidal, Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock And Out and Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann

What are you listening to? Dark Night Of The Soul, The Beatles, Wu-Tang, Neil Young

Favourite artist? I can’t name names without appearing too self -serving because most of my favorite artists are those I represent.

Favourite movie? The Big Lebowski, Shawshank Redemption, A Clockwork Orange, Wonder Boys, Pulp Fiction, The Usual Suspects, Apocalypse Now , Braveheart, I could go on and on…

I am influenced by… Authenticity

Do you parents understand what your job is? They understand that I wear many hats.

I spent last night… at our bar.

What do you eat for breakfast? For the last few years, I’ve religiously eaten a bowl of granola for breakfast.

Favourite thing to do in your city? I’m a big fan of the four hour dinner. Anyone that knows me well has sat with me at a restaurant and been through one of these. It’s my favorite thing to do in any city. I love grabbing a table and claiming it for the night. Eating, drinking and engaging in conversation. I’ve found that some of my most productive and creative moments have occurred over dinner with friends.

What’s something people might not know about you? I’m a scrabble freak.

What are you working on this week? My wife and I are expecting our second child in a few days so I’m running around getting things in order before chaos ensues in my household.

A.R.E Weapons Interview

Some time in the 90’s Brian McPeck and Matt McAuley followed the punk scene to D.C. They stuck it out playing garages and living rooms. Times were good but bigger things beckoned and they gapped it to New York – the edge of the pier, as Matt puts it. Four albums later they’re still in the big city. They talked to The New Order about their influences, ‘Skizz’ rock, and why they’re almost due for a fight.

What does A.R.E. stand for?
Brian: About 10 years ago I had a dream that I was a detective in the future, and the name on my door was A.R.E. Weapons, like first name A.R.E., last name Weapons.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
Matt: Ah…with difficulty.

It seems quite eclectic; you’ve got a bit of everything.
B: New York Street Rock? I’d say electro- punk, but that isn’t really fair cause it’s not super electro and it’s not really that punky. It’s a ball park, but New York electro punk will do.
M: I made up a name for it but it’s not really sticking. ‘Skizz’. We’re skizz rockers.

Ask Lee Quinones a Question at the NYTimes

NYTimes is giving anyone a chance to ask Lee Quinones any question they want. Mr. Quinones is a legendary graff artist and painter that has been around for quite awhile. The first set of questions will be answered this wednesday. There are some good questions out there but there are also some arguably scornful ones such as “Nothing like the feeling of destroying what isn’t yours to call attention to yourself is there Lee?” Given what we cover here at SLAMXHYPE I am sure our readers will have a bit more insightful questions. Ask your question.

Danner Spring/Summer 2010 Mountain Ridge Low Boot

Towards the end of last year the whole mountaineering boot fad went crazy, it seemed nearly every brand was hoping on the band wagon, so I made a promise to myself not to post any more as it was getting kind of boring – however there is always exceptions to rules like that and these bright blue Mountain Ridge Low Boot from Danner’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection are a must have.  What sets Danner apart from other brand’s mountain inspired boots, is that they are actually fit for purpose… you could really climb a mountain in these babies and the Vibram sole wouldn’t fall off after 2 miles.  Although, I’m sure the majority of these will be resigned to pounding the pavements of major cities on the feet of urban lumberjack hipsters.

MINDstyle x Kenny Scharf | Jetsons & Flintstones Concept Art

Earlier last month we announced that MINDstyle and great artist Kenny Scharf were collaborating on a set of figures, here we have a look at the concept art for the project based on the Jetsons & Flintstones. If you didn’t notice the concept art was translated from original paintings and mixes the prehistoric Flintstones with the futuristic Jetsons. In Scharf’s vision Fred and George have switched domestic situations and eras. Both toys will mirror the paintings down to the vehicles.

Matthew Barney at Sadie Coles

To coincide with his project entitled ‘Ancient Evenings’, an on going performance based work in seven parts in partnership with musical composer Jonathan Bepler, Matthew Barney is currently on show at London’s Sadie Coles. Showcasing his very delicate works each inspired by the 1983 novel Ancient Evenings which talks about the Egyptian belief of mythology and the seven passages of the soul after death: Ren, Khu, Sekhem, Ba, Ka, Khaibit, and Sekhu, his drawings touch on the idea of the seven acts in themes of mythology, death, rebirth, and reincarnation.

The exhibition runs until March 6th 2010. Sadie Coles 69 South Audley St, London W1.
