The Carhartt Heritage Line

The Carhartt Heritage line is dedicated to Carhartt’s long history as a reputable workwear brand. The line is made of classic materials and colours to create that authentic vintage look and feel. This effect is made possible by special vintage washings and dyes only available in the Heritage line. All prints are reproductions of original graphics that honor the legacy of Carhartt Inc. workwear. Retro-style details accompanied by a special Heritage hangtag highlight the exceptional character of this line.

A replica of the brand’s first logo, a train car superimposed
on a heart – Carhartt, forms the Heritage label and helps to distinguish the Heritage line from the rest of the Carhartt collection. Pants are made from original fabrics and though they are based on Carhartt’s historic work pants, the cut has been reworked to suit the contemporary consumer. Sweaters are made from classic materials and printed with traditional ink for authentic character. Vintage-style yarn sweaters and t-shirts are made from slub yarn; a special yarn produced using traditional methods. The soft, thick nubs of the yarn appear as irregularities in the woven fabric, giving it a distinctive knitted surface and retro impression. A new printing process combined with traditional textile ink re-creates the appearance of vintage prints. This way, prints are fused into the fabric and don’t have the rubbery shine of modern designs. Hems and seams are stitched in time-honored fashion, employing the same patterns and methods used fifty years ago.

Spanning nearly 50 years, the Julian Schnabel-curated survey is slated to feature sculpture, painting, film installation and photography, including the 1961 car windshield shot from which the show takes its name. Also included will be also culled from the Easy Rider’s personal holdings.

Newspeak: British Art Now Part 1 Exhibition

Opening this week at the  Saatchi Gallery in London is  the “Newspeak: British Art Now Part 1″ exhibition.  A celebration of the contemporary UK art scene curated by Charles Saatchi.

Perhaps best known for his patronage and promotion of the Young British Artist movement which made stars of Damien Hirst, Gavin Turk, Tracey Emin and Jake and Dinos Chapman and controversial collections like 1997 “Sensations” Saatchi is the most influential art collector in the world.  When he starts buying works by an artist or movement the art world sits up, takes notice and does the same.  Although sadly for some artists when he starts selling their works their career never recovers.

There has been a lot of anticipation for this show with many hoping it will have the same effect on the current crop of contemporary UK artists  including Pablo Bronstein, William Daniels, Matthew Darbyshire, Anne Hardy, Alastair Mackinven, Clunie Reid and Fergal Stapleton.  However many commentators have also suggested that whilst Saatchi has spent the last few years focusing more on modern works from China, the Middle East, America and India, the British art scene has moved on with the most interesting and relevant work now comes from video installations and the digital art world, two mediums which Saatchi is famously reticent to collect.

Will “Newspeak: British Art Now Part 1″ create the art superstars of the future?  Decide for yourself by visiting the exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery from 2nd June until October 17th.
